Jesus sent these 12 out with the following orders…
“Go to the people of Israel. They are like sheep that have become lost.
As you go, preach this message, ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’”
–Matthew 10:5-7, NIrV
After breakfast, Jared’s little sister saw him standing near the street outside their house in the small town near Jerusalem. Jared stuffed several dried figs into the pocket he wore in the belt that was tied around his robe.
“Where are you going today, Jared?” Anna asked.
“Today’s a busy day,” Jared explained. “There’s a lot going on. But my first choice is to go with my friends to fish in Jotham’s Pond. After that, my second choice is to go with you and Abba to the market. Today is market day!”
Anna clapped her hands. “I love it when Abba takes us to the market!” She ran inside the house to find their father.
Just then, Jared’s friend, Matthan, hurried up to him on the road.
“Come over to my house today,” Matthan cried. “A visitor arrived last night. His name is Bartholomew. He says he is a disciple of Jesus. Such amazing stories he tells us about Jesus. Bartholomew says Jesus is the Messiah we’ve been waiting for!”
Jared shook his head. “I can’t come today. I’m going with our friends to fish in Jotham’s Pond. Do you want to come, too?”
Matthan frowned. “You know Jotham doesn’t like it when we fish in his pond. Why are you going?”
“Amos and the others invited me,” Jared said. But he knew Matthan was right. Their friends were asking for trouble.
“If I don’t go with them,” Jared explained, “I want to go to market day.”
“There will be another market day next week,” Matthan said. “But Bartholomew may not ever get the chance to speak at my house again. Come! Hear about the marvelous miracles Jesus does.”
Jared felt something strange inside his heart. Who was this Man named Jesus? And why did Matthan think He was so important?
Reluctantly, Jared followed Matthan down the dusty road to Matthan’s house. He was surprised to see such a large crowd gathered. The two boys joined the crowd and listened to the words this stranger spoke. Bartholomew said how Jesus was good and kind. Bartholomew said Jesus did many miracles like healing a leper and calming a storm. Bartholomew said that he believed Jesus was the promised Messiah.
As Jared listened to Bartholomew’s words, his heart stirred. No ordinary man could make a leper well again. But Jesus did! Nobody in the entire world could tell the wind and waves to stop. But Jesus did! Jared wanted to learn more about this special Man named Jesus. Truly Jesus must be the Messiah they all had been looking for.
Jared’s eyes were shining as he looked over at his friend, Matthan. “It wasn’t my first choice to come here today,” Jared whispered to Matthan. “But it was the best choice I ever made!”
THE BEST CHOICE
Jesus was not an ordinary man. He is God’s Son. Ever since Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, God had promised to send His Son as the Messiah, the Savior who would die to take away the sins of the world.
Jesus did many miracles when He lived here on earth, but the biggest miracle of all was when He died and then rose again from the grave. Jesus died to pay the punishment for our sins and rose again to give us a special promise. Jesus is alive today! He loves you and wants you to be part of God’s kingdom and live with God forever in heaven after you die. Invite Jesus to be your Lord and Savior today. It will be the best choice you will ever make.
Here is a prayer you can pray:
Dear Jesus, I’m sorry for the bad things I have done and said. Please forgive me for my sins. Thank you for paying the punishment for my sins when you died on the cross. I am trusting in you to save me so that when I die I can go to heaven and live with you forever. Please fill me up with your Holy Spirit and help me follow you all the days of my life. Amen.
